Emanuel Bowen’s map shows the southeastern United States, eastern Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and part of South America. The map is based on Henry Popple’s large 1733 map of the region, although Bowen added and improved details of currents, trade winds, shoals, and sailing routes including the course of the Spanish gold fleet from Old Spain and the return trip from Cartagena and Vera Cruz. Details also include the locations of Indian tribes and early English, Spanish, and French forts and settlements. Three historical notations appear in the Atlantic Ocean, as follows:
K[ing] Charles II by Charter dated June 30th 1665 granted to the E[arl] of Clarendon, D[uke] of Albermarle, &c. the Province of Carolina extending Southward to the 20th Deg[ree] of N. Latitude so that Fort St. Augustin as well as Georgia falls within these limits.
Guanaham San Salvador or Cat Island was the first Land discovered in the New World Anno Dom 1492 by Christopher Columbus.
The Bahama Islands were taken from the English by the French and Spaniards in 1703. In 1717 Captain Rogers after having Plunder’d most of these Islands retook New Providence which has ever since belonged to the English.
Emanuel Bowen was a British engraver and print seller. He was well-known for his atlases and county maps. He was widely acknowledged for his expertise and was appointed as “Geographer to His Majesty,” King George II of England. His business was carried on by his son, Thomas Bowen. He also trained many apprentices, two of whom became prominent mapmakers, Thomas Kitchin and Thomas Jeffreys.
