Original binding; back cover has some staining; handsome bookplate on front flyleaf. Some browning and spotting to endpapers, and foxing to tex. Nice package overall. Very good condition for age.

A Seminal Work Published on the Eve of the Texas Revolution
In the History of Texas Edward mentions the many scarce Texas laws and decrees, and discusses the advantages of stock raising in Texas and on the vast herds of wild mustangs west of the Nueces River. The map prominently shows the “Drove of Wild Horses” between the Nueces and Rio Grande Rivers.
Streeter writes, “This contemporary history by Edward, notwithstanding some idiosyncrasies of the author, is one of the essential Texas books. It gives a good account of the physical features and towns and products of Texas of 1835.”
The map issued in 1836, the first year of Texas’ Independence shows the earliest settlements, and contains excellent detail of the first land grants. There are interesting notations about the Texas area such as Immense Herds of Buffalo in the west and Droves of Wild Horses in the south as well as Silver Mines and Crystalizing Salt Lakes. Detailed towns, roads and topographic features add to this very important map of the Newly Independent Texas.
In addition to Texas, the map covers parts of Coahuila, Tamaulipas, and Nueva Leon. It shows rivers, mountainous areas, land grants, colonies, forts, roads, route and trails, notes on wildlife, location of Indian tribes and villages, mines, notes on Colonel Benjamin Rush Milam’s death, and the site of General Jose Alvarez de Toledo y Dubois’s defeat in 1813. There is a note about the Rio del Norte, or Grande – its navigability and its possibilities as a southwestern boundary of Texas.
