Striking decorative map of Texas, hand colored by counties. Includes inset of Galveston and Sabine Lake. Shows towns, roads, railroads, mountains, rivers, Indian information, forts, etc. Texas is dominated by the large western counties of Bexar, Young Territory, Pecos, El Paso and Presidio.
Gray’s map effectively documents the progress of towns, roads, and railways in the late 1870s, with settlements concentrated in the eastern part of Texas. Individually colored counties also emphasize the progress of development, with smaller divisions to the east and larger counties remaining in the western reaches of the state. The inset map of Sabine Lake includes sounding measurements (in feet) of the coastal waters.
Ormando Willis Gray served as a civil and topographical engineer in Connecticut before establishing himself as a commercial mapmaker in Philadelphia in 1872. After producing numerous state atlases in a successful partnership with Henry Francis Walling, Gray went on to issue Gray’s Atlas of the United States with general Maps of the World, which appeared in 1873, with revised editions published through to 1879. Beginning in 1875, O.W. Gray & Son issued The National Atlas, Containing Elaborate Topographical Maps of the United States and the Dominion of Canada. Frank Arnold Gray is credited with authorship of a number of maps issued by O.W. Gray & Son, although his exact familial relationship is unknown.
