A highly decorative map concentrating on what in now modern Turkey but also stretching down to include Israel and Syria. Three vignette illustrations including one of Jerusalem, the Castles of Europe and Asia, and local inhabitants, all within an elaborate border.
For the Great Exhibition in 1851 John Tallis worked with engraver John Rapkin (1815-1876) to publish the ‘Illustrated World Atlas’, whose maps were later re-issued by the London Printing and Publishing Company. Their maps are prized for their steel-engraved vignettes showing the peoples, customs, architecture, landmarks, flora, and fauna of each country.
The maps produced by John Tallis represent a high point in nineteenth-century illustrated mapmaking. His collaboration with mapmaker John Rapkin and engraver J. Rogers produced maps of high quality and detail that proved very successful. John Tallis was the son of a publisher and printer who was also named John. He operated a printworks with his brother Frederick until 1850 as J. & F. Tallis, and then continued his publishing business as J. Tallis & Co. From London, he went on to establish agencies in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Cincinnati, and Baltimore.
