Eight small maps surround the two main hemispheres in Nolin’s 1742 map of the world. It largely follows the geography represented on Coronelli’s celebrated globe of 1688. California is shown as an Island with a huge Detroit d’Anian separating it from Terre de Jesso off the coast of Asia. Significant detail is shown, with notations in the South Pacific including the appearance of the Solomon Islands. Parts of the coastline of Terres Australes exist including the label Terre des Perroquets just south of Africa. The map was published by Jean Baptiste Nolin, originally in 1690. This third edition bears the date of 1742 and the address of rue Saint Jacques.
Jean Baptiste Nolin (c.1657-1708) was the leading French cartographer of the late sixteenth-century. Fulfilling various royal commissions for Louis XIV, Nolin had privileged access to official French geographical sources. He notably maintained a close and highly lucrative association with the great Venetian cartographer Vincenzo Maria Coronelli.
