Houghton Street, Newcastle Street, Strand, Nov 1st 1843. 12-inch terrestrial table globe, hand-colored gores mounted in brass meridian, in horizon ring with calendar, degrees, and zodiac scales, supported by an attractive tripod stand with decorative finial, 17 x 14 x 14 in. Minor damage at north and south poles; repaired damage in North Pacific. Horizon ring has some wear and discoloration. Overall, the globe is in good condition and presents well. $9,000.

Malby & Co. was a prominent 19th-century London-based globe-making firm established around 1839 by Thomas Malby Senior. He set up a workshop at 22 Houghton Street where he produced detailed globes of varying dimensions. His most well know globe was a reissuing of Addison’s 36” terrestrial globe which was shown at the Great Exhibition in 1861. Around 1862 Malby published globes by Edward Stanford (1827-1904) and also worked with map and globe maker James Wyld. Malby & Co. continued to produce globes until the beginning of the 20th century.
