David Burr (1803-1875) earned a reputation as an accomplished mapmaker and publisher. He was just 26 years old when in 1829, under the direction of his mentor Simeon DeWitt, he compiled the second earliest state atlas (New York). In the 1830s he attained the position of official Topographer of the United States Post Office and at the time of the publication of his rare and coveted American Atlas (1839) he was serving as Geographer of the House of Representatives.
