The Earliest Obtainable Large Map of Mississippi Territory
A fine example of this important early map of Mississippi Territory from the 1814 edition of Matthew Carey’s General Atlas. The map pre-dates the creation of Alabama Territory, extending from Georgia to the Mississippi River. It includes a number of early roads, towns, rivers, Indian tribes, settlements, etc. A number of early forts also appear, including Fort McHenry, Fort Stevens, Fort Pickering, etc. Many early Indian villages also named.
One of the earliest atlases produced in America, Carey’s General Atlas was first issued in 1795 and enjoyed a long and distinguished publishing history.
Matthew Carey is generally considered the founder of serious map making in the United States. A native of Dublin, Carey arrived in Philadelphia in 1784, and in the following year, he set up a print shop and publishing house. After 1792, he expanded his primary focus on general popular reading material to include maps and atlases. He issued his first folio atlas map of North Carolina in 1795. A second edition of the map was issued in 1814 and a third edition issued in about 1816.
The present is a rare and attractive map of Mississippi Territory by the first American publisher to issue cartographic works.
