Charming double hemisphere celestial chart on a polar projection. The map depicts the ecliptic pole to ecliptic, joined through the winter solstice. Based on the Hondius model, it shows only the brightest stars in their allegorical constellations. A pair of putti hold the title cartouche at top and an eagle holds a banner at bottom with the Latin quotation Coeli Enarrant Gloriam Dei – the heavens declare the glory of God. The hemispheres are surrounded by cherubs and clouds. A very attractive celestial chart. Rare.

Van der Aa was a principal publisher who resided in Leiden, a city just south of Amsterdam. He mainly published and printed maps. He began his career as an apprentice at the age of nine, and eventually opened a bookshop and publishing firm in 1677 in Leiden. In 1694 he was made printer to Leiden University, one of the oldest universities in all of Europe, and was made official printer to the town of Leiden by 1715. This chart shows the superiority of his work in his mastery of decorative embellishments that were characteristic of maps of the time period.
