Martin Sabransky’s fascination with the desert is reflected in his colorful paintings of the Southwest landscape. This untitled composition of red rock spires strongly resembles views one would see in New Mexico, southern Utah or Arizona. Sabransky depicts a series of beautiful red towering monolithic rock spires typical of the region. Sagebrush in the foreground is readily recognized by the gray-green color of the leaves and the shrubby appearance. A pair of clouds in the brilliant blue sky hang above the mountains and the desert valley.

Born in Kenton, Ohio in 1895, Sabransky studied art at the Randolph-Macon Academy in Virginia, and worked in Kansas City before moving to Los Angeles in the 1930s. He was a draftsman until about 1940, and then was a set designer for Disney and other movie studios. In his spare time, he worked on easel paintings. He died in Los Angeles on January 30, 1986. His exhibition history includes an Ohio Art Show in Youngstown in 1949, and the Businessmen’s Art Club (LA) in 1958.
